Texas State Government GIS Rule

A fundamental role of TGIC is to propose standards and guidelines related to GIS and geographic information technology for official adoption by the Department of Information Resources. Standards help the state leverage its investment in GIS technology by insuring that data sets developed by one organization can be used by many others. Based on language proposed by TGIC, the Department of Information Resources adopted the current GIS Rule on June 25, 2001 (Texas Administrative Code, Title 1, Part X, §201.6).

Federal GIS Standards

The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) is the primary federal governmental organization responsible for setting GIS standards in consultation and cooperation with state, local, and tribal governments, the private sector and academic community, and, to the extent feasible, the international community. Other federal agencies also develop business-specific GIS standards which may be applicable to your organization's business needs. TGIC recommends FGDC GIS Standards as a starting place for research on federal GIS standards.

Open Geospatial Consortium

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), Inc., is a non-profit, international, voluntary consensus standards organization that is leading the development of standards for geospatial- and location-based services. Visit the OGC Standards site to review these standards.
