Background

The texas.gov Internet domain has been delegated to the State of Texas Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Executive Director of the Department of Information Resources.  In 2010, the Texas CTO designated texas.gov as the domain name for Texas state agencies.  DIR will no longer issue new state.tx.us domain names for state agencies and recommends that agencies adopt the [agencyacronym].texas.gov naming convention, (for example, dir.texas.gov).

Domain Name Registration Process

Registering for an agency internet domain is a two-step process in which a state agency

• requests the reservation of a domain name – this step authorizes the use of a domain name (Step 1)
• requests the delegation of a domain name – this step accomplishes the technical implementation and testing activities (Step 2)

Step 1 – Request a domain name reservation

• Complete and submit the Domain Name Reservation form
• DIR will review conformance of the requested name to the established domain naming convention*
• Within five business days, DIR will notify you of the status of the requested name

* If the requested texas.gov domain name does not conform to the naming convention described in the policy, the request will be handled as an exception. A description of the domain name exception process can be found at Domain Name Exception.

Step 2 – Request a domain name delegation

• Complete and submit the Domain Name Delegation form
• Within five business days, the DIR technical team will contact you to complete the testing and delegation of your domain name
