Wireless Network Security Assessment Services

DIR provides wireless (802.11) network security assessments to state agencies, public education institutions, and other entities authorized to purchase security services.

Wireless Network Security Assessment Overview

The purpose and objective of the wireless security assessment is to determine if the assessed entity has implemented its wireless (802.11) network appropriately to provide a reasonable level of security in accordance with guidelines in Texas Administrative Code 202.

The assessment will be performed of selected locations including:

  • Perimeter Discovery Survey - Identification of authorized wireless access points and unauthorized (rogue) wireless access points.
  • Internal Discovery Survey – Confirmation of wireless access points (identified during the perimeter discovery) from inside the entities facility.
  • Identification and analysis of wireless access point configuration.
  • Identification and analysis of encryption used on wireless access points.
  • Signal leakage analysis to identify outside (non-Customer entity) access points that are accessible from inside the assessed entities facility.
  • Analysis of physical security of authorized wireless access points.

Upon signing up for this service, guidance will be provided detailing the specific information needed to receive this service and how the assessment will be coordinated.

Upon completion of the assessment, a written report will be delivered which includes the scope of the assessment, methodology employed, summary of the results – including security of authorized access points and unauthorized access points identified - and recommendations. A post assessment briefing can also be provided.
